NCAA Baseball Round-up: Virginia Tech Avoids Elimination; UVA makes Regional Final; Liberty falls to South Carolina

NCAA Baseball Round-up: Virginia Tech Avoids Elimination; UVA makes Regional Final; Liberty falls to South Carolina

Virginia Tech’s baseball team defeated Coastal Carolina 9-1 Saturday afternoon in an elimination game of the Blacksburg Regional in the NCAA Baseball Championship.  The Hokies got on the board first in the 6th inning with an infield hit from Mark Zagunis that scored Alex Perez.  Andrew Rash made it a 2-0 lead with a lead-off homerun in the 7th and the Hokies blew it open with a 5-run 9th inning.

Zagunis led the way for Tech at the plate, finishing 4-5 with 3 RBI. Rash and Pinder, who each had a homerun in the game, finished with 3 hits apiece.  Tech starter, Devin Burke, was working on a complete game shut-out into the 9th when he gave-up a solo homerun. Burke got the complete game, giving-up just 5 hits.

Coastal Carolina’s season comes to an end while Virginia Tech will play again Sunday afternoon at 1:00 in a re-match with Connecticut.

 

As for the University of Virginia, the Cavaliers win another low-scoring affair, defeating Elon 2-0.  Kenny Towns and Nate Irving drove-in the only runs of the game while UVA’s pitching held-up their end in the shut-out.  Scott Silverstein got the win going 6 innings and striking-out 6. Kyle Crockett came in for the final 2 innings to get the save again. He got 3 strike-outs in the 9th to close things out.  Virginia advances to the Regional Final at 6:00 on Sunday against either UNC-Wilmington or Elon.

 

Finally, in the Columbia Regional, Liberty University lost to the powers of South Carolina 19-3 in their second regional game. The Flames struggled against the Gamecocks’ starter, Jordan Montgomery, who pitched 7 innings with 11 strike-outs. Liberty had 5 errors in the loss and didn’t score until the bottom of the 9th when Justin Sizemore hit a 3-run homerun.

South Carolina advances to the Columbia Regional Final, while Liberty will play in an elimination game Sunday afternoon at 1:00 in a re-match with Clemson.
