The Martinsville Bulldogs are coming off a 1-9 season, but things are changing for the Bulldogs, starting with a new head coach.
Former Virginia Tech standout Orion Martin is now leading the team, and has already seen results from his off-season training regimen.
"Just first of all just starting with the strength and conditioning program in the off-season,” Martin said. “Making sure we're lifting and conditioning and getting our bodies prepared for the season. I think that was the first step. And then later on in the summer through 7-on-7 and just individual workouts. Just working on fundamentals and technique throughout the summer. That's some of the things we've focused on. They bought in. They bought in from day one. They've been 100% in, working out, lifting, running. They've been there. We had great attendance over the summer."
Senior Brandon Carter said: "Oh it's doing very well. The team chemistry and hard work has been increased so much since he came. Everything increased, even the people that we had. We had a lot more people show up since then. At first we used to get like half of the people do that but since summer since he came, the whole team's been there every day."
One of the reasons for increased participation in off-season activities is having a young coach who's not that far removed from his playing days. Martin played for the Hokies from 2004 to 2008 and brings a fresh perspective along with everything he learned over the years at Tech.
"We can relate to him a lot because he's been there in our footsteps just like we have so he understands where we come from," Carter said.
Orion Martin added: "Being out of college only a few years, playing ball at Tech, I think I'm able to help relate to them. Some of the stuff they're going through, I've already went through as a player so that also helps out a lot. Actually one kid sent me a YouTube clip of me getting hit in the face with a football during pre-game my senior year. So they're always going on YouTube and checking out old Tech clips. It's pretty fun."
