About 250 gallons of fuel oil leaked into Wythe County sewer lines.
The spill was traced to a home and is being called an accident.
The contaminant also made its way into the Austinville Wastewater Treatment Plan, where it was discovered on Saturday.
The director of the plant says there is no threat to the county's drinking water, and sewer services will not be interrupted.
“Due to the swift actions of everyone involved, we were able to contain the oil before it made its way into local waterways,” Wythe County Emergency Manager Ikey Davidson wrote in a news release.
The wastewater plant services nearly 80 homes. The tanks at the plant are scheduled to be pumped Monday afternoon.
