Virginia Tech says student season ticket sales are down about 11 percent from the same time last year. For the general public that numbers down about 5 percent.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Virginia Tech's football season kicks off in a couple of weeks, but tickets may not be as hard to come by as years before.

Virginia Tech says student season ticket sales are down about 11 percent from the same time last year. For the general public, that number's down about 5 percent.

Virginia Tech says Lane Stadium has been sold out for 93 consecutive games. Some fans say the Hokies 7 and 6 record last year was enough to slow down ticket sales this season. I asked Sandy Smith, Director of Virginia Tech's Tickets Services, if he thought that Tech's lackluster performance last year had anything to do with slower ticket sales.

"I can't answer that," said Smith, "I think that's an individual thing for each person to decide whether they... I thought we had a pretty good season. We won a bowl game."

Then I asked, why does Tech think student season ticket sales are down?

"I can't answer that question," said Smith, "That's a question you'll have to ask upperclassmen. I don't have a clue."

I asked rising VT senior Jonathan Luse what he thought about Tech students not buying season tickets like they used to.

''I think that's kind of shameful. If you think about the Hokie spirit and everything, I think that's shameful cause everyone who is a Hokie fan knows that football games where it's at," Luse said.

As of Thursday, Smith said about 1,000 season tickets were still for sale. The student price is $66, while the general public price is $300.

For the first time in at least 3 years, Tech is advertising to sell those tickets.

"That's probably true. We typically don't advertise because we don't have anything to sell but we have some for sale, so we're advertising," Smith said.
