All lanes have reopened, and traffic is now moving again in the area.
The Virginia Department of Transportation hopes to have one lane of Interstate 81 South in Rockbridge County re-opened between 10 p.m. and midnight after a 41-vehicle pileup.
The pileup is at mile marker 196.
State police at the scene tell WDBJ7 that a woman and child were airlifted from the accident to to the hospital.

Rockbridge County Emergency Management Coordinator Robert Foresman said the first accident involved more than 20 vehicles near mile marker 196. He said two tractor trailers and a camper overturned.
Foresman said there were reports of a second accident behind the first involving at least 15 additional vehicles.
Foresman said emergency responders have treated at least ten people, but there is no information on the extent of their injuries.
We're told the southbound lanes of the Interstate are closed at mile marker 196 because of a 21-vehicle accident.
