A Blacksburg woman will serve seven years in prison for driving drunk and getting into an accident that ultimately led to the death of her child.
Harmony Stair was intoxicated and pregnant when she pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle that had the right-of-way at the intersection of North Main Street and Route 460 in Blacksburg on Dec. 18, 2011.
Stair pled no contest to involuntary manslaughter DUI and second-degree DUI on April 3. According to a news release from the Commonwealth’s Attorney, a Virginia State Trooper witnessed the accident.
Stair, who was 7 ½ months pregnant at the time of the accident, was critically hurt in the wreck. The baby, Caiden Matthew Stair, was delivered by emergency Caesarean section. He died on Dec. 20 from injuries sustained in the accident.
Stair was convicted of DUI in 2007. While out on bound for involuntary manslaughter, she was convicted of public intoxication in Botetourt County in December 2012.
“In spite of the tragic results of Stair’s intentional decision to drink and drive we have no indication that her behavior has changed,” Montgomery County Commonwealth’s Attorney Mary Pettitt wrote in a news release. “Thanks to the tireless work of Blacksburg officers we obtained some justice for Caiden today.”
