UPDATE: Boaters asked to avoid part of Smith Mountain Lake

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. -

Appalachian Power says it will begin using a skimmer and other equipment to remove debris from Smith Mountain Lake on Monday.  The utility that operates the lake says its crews found a substantial amount of debris on Friday.  Appalachian Power is asking boaters to travel carefully.

Earlier Friday, state officers asked boaters to avoid Smith Mountain Lake above marker R-54. 

Officers with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries say flooding has washed a considerable amount of debris into the lake above Beaver Dam Creek.  The debris includes logs, car tires and trash.
