Planners look to rework the gateway into the county

BOTETOURT CO., Va. -

It has been in discussion for years, but residents in one community may finally see less talk and a lot more action.

Botetourt County has started its long range planning and envisioning process for exit 150 off of Interstate 81.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has been working on its portion of the plan for years.

But, the county says this is an opportunity to rework, redesign and rediscover new possibilities for "the gateway" into Botetourt.

"It's an almost once in a lifetime planning process -you're taking the redevelopment of that intersection and it's like a one shot chance you have, we have to do it right and attract the highest and best uses for that area," says Botetourt County Planning Manager & Zoning Administrator Wade Burkholder.

The county says it's just beginning the process, but the truck stop at 150 is set to be eliminated.

Planning and zoning says construction on the project is slated to begin by early 2015.
