Carilion Clinic plans to buy the property, according to a Carilion spokesman and paperwork filed with Roanoke City Council

ROANOKE, Va. -

Carilion Clinic plans to purchase the property where the former Ukrop’s grocery store once was, according to paperwork filed with Roanoke City Council.

Carilion Clinic plans to build an ambulatory specialty clinic, according to the paperwork.

The property, which is at the corner of Franklin Road and Wonju Street, has been vacant since 2009.

Roanoke City Council still has to approve the proposal because of a previous agreement with the developer. The purchase proposal is on the agenda for Tuesday’s 2 p.m. city council meeting.  A Carilion spokesman says the sale would be good for the city.  Carilion will pay taxes on the building and land.  The move could spur additional development along Franklin Road.  Carilion expects to release additional details on Wednesday.

Ukrop’s operated the grocery store in Roanoke for two years.
