DANVILLE, Va. -

A Danville dog owner is facing cruelty and neglect charges after a pit bull was found chained to the ground with less than a foot of chain.

The white female pit bull was found Wednesday. The short chain prevented the dog from walking or moving her head. The chain was embedded in the dog’s neck, and the wound will require surgery for the neck wound. Flies and maggots covered the wound.

The dog was also severely underweight, and had wounds on her legs and body.

The dog is being treated at a local veterinary clinic.

Cruelty to animals is a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by fines up to $2,500 and a 12-month jail sentence.
