The father of a child who accidentally shot a toddler in Danville is now facing charges

DANVILLE, Va. -

UPDATE: Police are pressing charges against the father of a child who accidentally shot a toddler in a home in Danville.

The shooting happened earlier this month.

Police charged Quinton Carter for keeping the gun in a place where a child could get it.

They say a six year old found the gun and accidentally fired it through a bedroom wall.

The bullet hit a little girl in the back while she was playing.

The girl is now recovering in a rehab facility in Norfolk.

A 22-month old baby who is in the hospital after being accidentally shot by a six year old,

It happened in the 700 block of Glendale Avenue in Danville on Sunday.

Neighbors say this is a quiet neighborhood, and that they are still in shock.

"It upset me real bad because I feel like when you have a gun, that you need to keep a safety lock on the gun,” neighbor Wanda Moore said.
Some neighbors on Glendale Avenue are keeping a closer eye on their little ones. A toddler along this street was playing in a room when she was hit by a bullet.

Police say the toddler, whose name is not being released, was shot by a .380 handgun. They say a 6-year-old was playing with a gun and pulled the trigger. The bullet traveled through a bedroom wall and hit the toddler. There's a message police wants to send to the community.

“We hope this particular situation, that will raise some awareness in the community, with folks to go check the status of their firearm,” Danville Police Captain Matt Carter said.

While this incident is leaving some people's emotions rattled in the community, some are turning to faith.

“I'm going to pray for the family. They need to keep in our prayers about the family, and the child that got shot and we need to pray for the little child who accidentally shot the child,” a neighbor said.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. Charges are pending against the owner of the gun.

A 1-year-old child is in stable condition after being shot by a 6-year-old in Danville on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators say the .380 handgun belonged to a man who lived inside of the home. The 1-year-old girl underwent surgery at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, after being taken in a private vehicle to Danville Regional Medical Center.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Glendale Avenue.

At the time of the shooting, there were seven people inside the home – four adults, and three children. The 6-year-old apparently found the gun and accidentally fired it. The bullet went through a bedroom wall and hit the 1-year-old in the back while she was playing in another room.

Charges are pending against the owner of the hand gun.

Shortly before 3:00 pm yesterday Danville Police responded to a residence in the 700 block of Glendale Ave. for a report of shots fired. It was discovered that a 1-year-old (child turns 2 in October) was transported to Danville Regional Medical Center by private vehicle. The child was subsequently transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery. She is currently listed in stable condition.

The investigation revealed that the residence was occupied by seven (7) individuals at the time of the shooting. Present were four (4) adults and three (3) children. The children's ages were 1 (victim), 3, and 6. The 6 year-old-child found a .380 handgun belonging to a male living in the residence and accidentally discharged it. The bullet traveled through a bedroom wall and struck the 1-year-old in the back while she was playing in another room. The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending against the owner of the handgun for allowing access to firearms by children.

A young child is in serious condition, following a shooting in Danville.

Officers were called to a home on Glendale Avenue around 3 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they learned a 1-year-old had been shot in the back and was being taken to a hospital in a private car.

The child was stabilized at Danville Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

No one has been charged in connection with the shooting, but police are still investigating.
