Danville police find masks used by stabbing suspects, ask for public's help solving murder

A man was stabbed to death Sept. 30 as he was leaving his job at a gas station.

DANVILLE, Va. -

The Danville Police Department held a news conference Thursday to ask for the public’s help in solving a murder.

Gilmore Martin Cowan was stabbed to death Sept. 30 in the parking lot of the PURE gas station on South Boston Road. Cowan was getting into a friend’s car at the end of his shift at the gas station.

"We're hoping that someone will see these pictures, recognize that, and attach that to a person or a name that we will be able to follow up on,” Danville Police Chief Philip Broadfoot said.

Investigators believe one of the suspects was cut during the assault.

“We are asking the public to contact us if they know of anyone who has had a recent injury consistent with a cut or laceration, or who has purchased or acquired items commonly used to treat a cut or laceration, such as bandages or antibiotic ointment,” the news release stated.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

Additional information will be shared during a press conference Thursday about the investigation into the stabbing death of a man in Danville that took place on September 30.

The press conference will be held in Danville City Council Chambers at 10:30 a.m.

Gilmore Cowan of Pittsylvania County was the victim of the stabbing.

According to witnesses, Cowan got off work at the Airport Pure Station on South Boston Road, and got into the car of a friend who was there to pick him up. After getting into the car, he was approached by a man wearing a mask. The suspect stabbed Cowan several times and ran away.

According to the Danville Police Department, the suspect may also have been cut. Another man was also there at the time of the attack.

Cowan was taken to the hospital in his friend’s car. She was not injured in the attack.

There are new details about a man who was stabbed to death Monday morning in Danville.

Danville Police are looking for a killer.

A man was walking out of a store on South Boston Road near Oakland Avenue just after midnight Monday when someone stabbed him.

Police are still trying to notify his next of kin about his death, so they aren't releasing his name or any other information at this point.
