The arrests were part of a multi-state roundup.

PEARISBURG, Va. -

Armed with guns and vests the Virginia and West Virginia State Police, U.S. Marshals, unmarked units, and other agencies rounded up drug offenders.  In Giles County, prescription drug abuse is a big problem.

“It used to be marijuana was an issue. And you'd see some cocaine, but the biggest majority 9 out 10 of our charges are prescription medication,” said Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons.

Offenders were brought in on direct drug indictments. Some were charged with felonies, others misdemeanors. A total of 120 indictments in all were handed out. An undercover operation led to the arrests.

“Hopefully it will set a precedent, we're trying to stop the illegal drug trafficking and stop the usage of it,” said Millirons. “Every day we have people die here in the state of Virginia because of drugs.”

From December 2012 to June, law enforcement found several kinds of prescription drugs being illegal distributed, including Suboxone, Lortabs, Adderall and Oxycontin. marijuana, heroin and cocaine were also found. Charges were also brought down on two meth labs. Officials say the drug doesn't just affect those who taking them.

“It's just not the people that are using them that suffer, you got families that are involved. They're really the ones that's suffering,” said Millirons.

14 people were also arrested in West Virginia for drug crimes stemming from Giles County.

More than 50 people were arrested. The hope is to keep the streets of Giles County free of illegal drug use.
