Roanoke County students go back to school Tuesday, August 27th

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. -

As students start back the 2013-2014 school year on Tuesday, August 27th, school transportation crews are preparing school buses in advance of the first day of school when school buses will return to roads all across Roanoke County.

Roanoke County Public Schools wants drivers to be aware of all buses and give them plenty of space on the roads, particularly during the morning and afternoon runs.

While following a bus, drivers should be alert to the bus and its numerous stops.

Drivers should permit a safe distance of twenty feet or more between their vehicle and the bus.

Drivers should not only be prepared to stop when following buses but be responsible and obey all laws to guarantee the safety of children.

By law in Virginia, motorists are required to stop for a school bus that is loading or unloading children, whether the motorists is approaching a bus from the opposite direction or following a bus, with one exception: motorists are not required to stop for a school bus if they are driving in the opposite direction on a road that is separated by a barrier or median.

Motorists must stay stopped until all children are clear of the roadway and the bus starts moving again.
