Updated On: Jul 23 2013 10:41:46 PM EDT
The Forest Volunteer Fire Company has been awarded a $5,000 grant by the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company.
According to a news release, the funds will allow the Forest Volunteer Fire Company to buy a new water supply hose and portable radio cases, improving their ability to safely and effectively respond to fires and other emergencies.
A portion of the news release is included below, which describes the further intended uses for the funds:
Grant funds will primarily be used to upgrade and replace the department’s damaged water supply hose which enables firefighters to get water from one truck or fire hydrant to several trucks simultaneously. The funds will also be used to purchase hose specifically designed to fight brush fires. This lightweight hose allows firefighters to safely contain brush fires until designated brush trucks can arrive. Additionally, the department will purchase portable radios cases to protect each member’s communication device, enabling the devices to last longer.
The grant will be presented on Wednesday, July 24 at 1:00 p.m. at the Forest Volunteer Fire Company, located at 1645 Thomas Jefferson Road in Forest.

The grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. This year, Fireman’s Fund celebrates its 150th anniversary. Founded with a social mission to support the fire service, Fireman’s Fund today awards grants to fire service organizations for life-saving equipment, firefighter training and community education programs. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has awarded grants to more than 1,900 different organizations totaling more than $30 million – including more than $390,000 in Virginia. Independent insurance agencies and brokers that sell Fireman’s Fund products, like Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV), are able to direct these grants to support the fire service.
Through this program, Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, Inc. has directed $135,000 in grants to fire departments nationwide.
“Firefighters should have the best equipment available to them,” said Bob Bradshaw, President and CEO of IIAV. “With limited budgets, fire departments are often prevented from purchasing the equipment they need. We’re proud to be able to support the community in such a meaningful way.”
