The retirement community was evacuated Tuesday following a water pipe burst.

ROANOKE CO., Va. -

Residents at Friendship Retirement Community in Roanoke were allowed back into the facility after they were forced to evacuate Tuesday night due to a burst pipe.

The pipe burst was caused by low temperatures early in the week.

Just 24 hours after the evacuations, they were allowed back inside.

The pipe was located on the third floor. Water damaged both the second and first floors below.

Some residents had to stay at a family member's house, while others went to a hotel.

Friendship called in an emergency clean up crew. They worked overnight to make sure residents could get back in Wednesday.

No information on the total cost of damages has been given at this time.

===============================

Twenty-four people have been evacuated from a Friendship Retirement Community building in Roanoke County after a water pipe burst Tuesday night.

The multi-story building is an independent living facility located at 460 Blue Bell Lane in Roanoke County. The water pipe burst was reported around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Three floors sustained serious water damage after the pipe broke. Everyone inside the building was evacuated.

"I was surprised," said Ken Mowbray. "It was a small piece busted out, but I guess just heavy water flow from the sprinkler pipe in a short amount of time can cause a lot of damage."

Mowbray is the director of campus admissions at Friendship.

He said all 24 residents are staying with family, at a hotel or at another apartment on site.

Maintenance workers plan to be back on Wednesday to repair the pipes and begin cleaning up the facility.
