They travel across the country and will showcase their talents Tuesday night.

ROANOKE, Va. -

There are eight drum corps from around the country competing tonight in Salem. The best of the best of drum and bugle corps is here in Salem right now.

Hundreds of students compete across the country.

"You're sweating all the time, your feet hurt and you don't know how you're going to make it through the summer," Percussionist Adam Wood said.

Imagine being away from your friends and family for 80 days to stand in the heat, running drills over and over and over.

"Eventually you just get better and you start sweating less and your body starts getting used to it and your feet get stronger," Wood said.

Adam Wood is a sophomore at Hidden Valley High School. He performs in intense drum and bugle competitions across the country with the Pioneers stationed out of Wisconsin.

Now, he's on his turf.

"It's good to be back some where you know and some where you're familiar with instead of waking up and not knowing where you are in the morning," Wood said.

The drum itself is 36 pounds; add that to a 4 to 5 hour training day, and that's one exhausting day.

Wood says it's hard stand out in a group of 100 from four different countries.

"You can only work on yourself and you can't change what other people are doing. As long as you're trying as hard as you can, you're going to make the corps better," Wood said.

Even hundreds of miles away from his home, Wood says he's made a temporary home on the road with his second family.

You spend 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the same people you have no choice but to become family with them," Wood said.

A group of Adam's friends and family is up in the stands to cheer him on. The Pioneer's head to their next competition in Northern Virginia on Wednesday.
