MARTINSVILLE, Va. -

A place for ideas, innovation, and invention is soon opening to the community.

It's called the Fab Lab, a so-called hub for creativity in Uptown Martinsville.

Students from Patrick Henry Community College and New College Institute are using the center for the first time this semester.

The focus is to create the "next big idea" using 3-D printers and specialized software.

Academic leaders are encouraging students to develop something that could become profitable for the area.

"So you have an idea for a product you would like to make and you come in here and make it. You first design the product on the computer and hopefully that personal project becomes a national project or worldly project," said Matthew Wade, the Fab Lab Coordinator.

Starting later this semester the Fab Lab will welcome the public to use the equipment.
PHCC instructors says this is the only lab available to both students and the community in our region.
