Kenneth Walsh is the new interim police chief.

ALTAVISTA, Va. -

A temporary leader is taking over Altavista's police department.

Kenneth Walsh is the new interim police chief. He was appointed by town council Tuesday night to replace Clay Hamilton, who was fired a few months ago after publicly criticizing town leaders.

Walsh has been with the department for 16 years and has more than 25 years of police experience.

He wants Altavista residents to have a better view of their police force and move past recent controversies.

"We're going to continue to partner with the citizens of Altavista, including the business owners and other groups here in town, to both eliminate crime and work to solve the crimes that have been committed," said Walsh.

Walsh would like to become the permanent police chief. He plans to apply for the job when it's posted.
