Library renovations on tap in Roanoke
When members of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce took a closer look at Elmwood Park improvements Friday morning, they couldn't ignore the amphitheater stage that now commands the site
But it was another project that Sheila Umberger wanted to talk about.
The Director of Roanoke Public Libraries explained how work that begins in a matter of weeks will transform the interior of the Main Library, opening up the floor plan to create a closer connection with the park outside.
"We've always felt we were part of the park," Umberger said in an interview. "I feel this is going to open it up even more for us to be a part of all the good things happening in Elmwood Park right now."
Phil Schirmer is the Roanoke City Engineer. "We have a renovation project that's scheduled to start this fall in the library. There's going to be a nice terrace on the back of the library," Schirmer told WDBJ7, "so I think those two can work together to bring library programs into the park, and park programs into the library."
The library project goes out to bid in the next ten days. The work should be completed in the next year.
