A Bedford county school is standing out nationally.

Bedford Middle School is getting an award for "making middle grades work." It's one of only nine schools in the United States to get the honor from the Southern Regional Education Board.

The school was chosen for efforts to make classes more challenging. Over the last two years, teachers have been researching ways to engage students and help them learn.

The goal is to get them prepared for higher grade levels and beyond.

"We have the training in place to get them thinking, working together, problem solving, so that when they get to the high school they are better prepared for those higher level classes," said Bedford Middle School's principal, Rhetta Watkins.

Leaders from Bedford Middle School accepted their award last week at a conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.
