Grayson County murder suspect extradited to Virginia

A man accused of killing his girlfriend last year in Grayson County is back in Virginia.


A man accused of killing his girlfriend in Grayson County last year is back in Virginia.

Matthew Jones was being held on a bank robbery charge in Randolph County, N.C. On Wednesday he was brought back to Virginia, according to records at the New River Valley Regional Jail.

Jones is accused of killing Desia Rae George. George’s body was found in Grayson County on May 22, 2013. George had four children.

The boyfriend of a woman found dead in Grayson County last May has been charged with killing her.

A Grayson County Circuit Court Grand Jury returned an indictment charging that Matthew Jones, 35, did “kill and murder” Desia Rae George at some time between April 15 and May 22 of this year.

The mother of four had been missing since April 15. Her youngest is a 2-month-old baby girl. According to a news release, the Sheriff’s Offices of Carroll and Grayson Counties held interviews and daily searches for evidence to find George. Her body was found in Grayson County on May 22.

The direct indictment was returned on October 25 and the indictment remained sealed until Jones could be arrested or detained. Copies of the indictment were forwarded, along with the request that the indictment be filed as a detainer against Jones by the Sheriff of Randolph County, Asheboro, North Carolina on October 31.

Jones is being held in Randolph County Jail awaiting trial on bank robbery charges.

The Virginia charge will not be tried until the completion of the North Carolina case due to charges pending trial. Jones will be returned to stand trial on the murder indictment.
