Charges will not be filed against a Lynchburg police officer who accidentally shot another officer.
Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Doucette released the findings from his investigation Wednesday. On April 10, officer T.M. Clark accidentally shot officer Gary Hilber as police were trying to serve a warrant. The shooting happened at the McCausland Ridge Apartments on Langhorne Road.
Doucette found that a number of factors contributed to the shooting. The investigation revealed that poor lighting at the scene, the language between the two officers, and the fact that Hilber was not wearing a uniform all were factors to the shooting.
Hilber was shot once. He was treated at the hospital, and released the following day.
Hilber has left the Lynchburg Police Department to work for the Chesapeake Police Department to be closer to family. He was in the process of interviewing for the Chesapeake job at the time of the shooting.
The Lynchburg Police Department is still conducting an internal review of the shooting.
