Drivers should anticipate delays on Interstate 81 starting on Sunday evening, and throughout most of the week, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
All of the work is part of a truck climbing lane project in Montgomery County.
Starting Sunday night, a detour will be put in place on I-81 South from 6:30 p.m. until 6 a.m. Traffic will be detoured at Exit 132 (Dixie Caverns), onto Route 11/460, and back onto I-81 at Exit 118 (Christiansburg).
Starting Monday night, VDOT will put lane closures in place. The lane closures run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Thursday night.
Additionally, VDOT will blast at mile marker 124 in Montgomery County on Monday and Thursday. Starting at 10:30 a.m. on those days, slow roll lane closures will be put in place for I-81 North and South. Once the blasting is finished, traffic will be related to travel at normal speed.
Slow roll lane closures begin for traffic on I-81 South at mile marker 128, and at mile marker 114 for I-81 North.
