If you’re looking to help out your community and lower your book fines, Roanoke City Libraries have you covered.

The city’s public library system will be collecting new unopened school supplies. In return, 50 cents will be deducted from your library fine.

The supplies will be donated to Fallon Park Elementary, Lincoln Terrace Elementary and Roundhill Elementary.

Librarians said they’re excited to see how many people will participate in the school supply drive.

"School supplies cost a lot of money and this helps provide those supplies without personal cost which in turn gives kids the tools they need to excel in school,” said librarian Shalon Hurlbert.

The school supply drive is a part of the library system’s Star City Reads program. Beginning in the fall, volunteers will go into the three elementary schools and read to the students to help spark interest in reading.
