The South Peak development was delayed by the bad economy, but today Smith and area leaders broke ground on a 117-room Hilton Garden Inn.

It's taken several years longer than expected, but construction is now under way in one of the most visible locations in the Roanoke Valley.

On Tuesday morning a local developer and community leaders broke ground on the new Hilton Garden Inn at South Peak.

The project is going to be a 117-room hotel with a restaurant, swimming pool, and incredible views.

On Tuesday morning, developer Jim Smith spoke about his vision for the property that was delayed by the economy, but now is coming to pass.

“I dreamed of a gateway to my hometown that was forward leaning, that looked progressive, looked like a community when you drive through,” South Peak Developer Jim Smith said. “You can say that it's somewhere that has a future that's going somewhere.”

Hilton officials and community leaders from the Roanoke Valley joined the developers for the groundbreaking Tuesday morning. Construction is expected to be completed by next summer. The hotel will employ about 40 people.

Now that work has begun, Smith hopes that will answer many of the critics who were skeptical of the project in the beginning.

He says the project will also include condos, office buildings, restaurants, and other construction. The economic impact for the county could continue for more than 20 years.
