The Freedom From Religion Foundation wants organizers of the Buchanan fair to stop praying at the beginning of each night of its carnival.
Buchanan's mayor Larry Hall presented the letter to council Monday night.
The letter states: “The Buchanan Community Carnival is promoted and hosted by the town. Scheduling a prayer at a town event indicates government endorsement of religion. A reasonable Buchanan resident would conclude that the decision to pray at a town event constitutes a preference for religion over non-religion, and Christianity over all other faiths.”
An attorney for the group says it is waiting to hear from the town about steps its taking to change this in the future.
At this point, Buchanan's attorney is reviewing the letter.
