Hokie Food Drive 2013 in place for Virginia Tech's first home game

Tomorrow, starting at 8 in the morning, volunteers will collect non-perishable food at the University City Boulevard Kroger in Blacksburg. All of the proceeds will benefit The Giving Tree Food Pantry.


The Hokie Food Drive 2013 happens just before Virginia Tech’s first home football game of the season with Virginia Tech vs Western Carolina.

Donations of non-perishable food will be collected for The Giving Tree Food Pantry, a non-profit, all volunteer food pantry dedicated to serving the hungry in the New River Valley.

The Giving Tree Food Pantry helps over 350 families a month and the numbers are growing.

Donations will be collected at the Kroger located on University City Boulevard in Blacksburg before the football game.

Drop-off times are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The pantry is mostly in need of breakfast cereals, canned fish, meats and fruits.

Here's a full list of needed items:

Breakfast cereals.

Fish, canned: salmon, tuna.

Meats, canned: chicken, beef stew, chili.

Fruits, canned.

Meals, boxed: complete dinners, helper and pasta meals.

Pasta, canned or dry: ravioli, macaroni, noodles, spaghetti.

Peanut butter.

Rice: instant and dinners.

Soup: canned and boxed.

Snack Items: dried fruit, granola bars, whole grain crackers, can/ bag nuts, trail mix.

Tomato products: canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste.

Monetary donations will also be collected.
