Two in our region have received high marks

Hospitals in central and southwestern Virginia are ranked among the best in the state. US. News & World Report released its national rankings Tuesday, and both Centra Health in Lynchburg and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital were in Virginia's top ten.

Four Virginia hospitals, in Norfolk, Richmond, Fairfax and Charlottesville, were nationally ranked, but 16 other hospitals including Centra Health and Carilion Clinic also met standards for strong performance within the state.

There are 128 hospitals in Virginia. Centra Health was number 6 on the U.S. News list of best hospitals in the state.

The Lynchburg facility had 8 high-performing specialties. Chief Executive E. W. Tibbs says Centra has made a deliberate effort to benchmark against other hospitals and adopt best practices.

"So if we find a best way to do something we try to insure that we have organizational learning at every level," Tibbs told WDBJ7 in an interview Wednesday, "so that we have consistency in how we approach our patients."

Carilion Roanoke Memorial came in at Number 8, with 6 high-performing specialties. Carilion Clinic President and CEO Nancy Agee says patient safety and the quality of care are paramount.   "We're very committed to the region to serving the needs of the region," she said, "so yes we're very pleased with the ranking.  I think we're blessed in the region to have extraordinary health care that we have."

LewisGale Medical Center in Salem did not appear in the U.S. News rankings, but Vice President Nancy May released the following statement Wednesday afternoon:

"While we’re not ranked in this particular study, there are several third-party sources, such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, Anthem, Healthgrades, as well as others, that rank our hospitals among the top in the nation for patient care. Unlike the U.S. News & World Report that factors in volume, physician surveys, and clinical outcomes, the sources that have ranked us among the top in the nation rely solely on clinical processes and health outcomes."
