March on Washington tribute event to be held in Lynchburg Wednesday

A celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington “A Call to Unity” will be held in Lynchburg on Wednesday.

Everyone who attended the 1963 March on Washington, those who attended the 2013 50th Anniversary March on Washington, and community members are invited to attend the event taking place at Providence Place on 400 Oakley Avenue in Lynchburg Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m.

The event will consist of reflections given by attendees of the 1963 March including Dr. L. Garnell Stamps, Coach Willard Bailey and others. It will also feature reflections by leaders in the community, a community prayer for unity, music, a reenactment of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, a sharing and passing of the torch to youth, and words of encouragement for the future by Dr. James E. Coleman Jr., according to a news release.

Dr. Coleman was a speaker at the 2001 38th Anniversary of the March on Washington in D.C. and attended the 50th anniversary.
