Proctor and Gamble recalls pet food

Published On: Dec 24 2013 03:23:29 AM EST   Updated On: Aug 16 2013 05:45:17 PM EDT

The food could be contaminated with salmonella.

Proctor and Gamble is recalling two well known brands of dry dog food  and cat food because of possible salmonella contamination.

The  brands in the recall are Iams and Eukanuba dry dog food. They include certain lots and bag sizes of Eukanuba dry dog foods for puppies and adults, Iams dry dog foods in some Health Naturals and proActive varieties, plus some Healthy Naturals, ProActive and hairball preventing varieties for cats.

Proctor and Gamble voluntarily issued the recall after salmonella turned up during random testing at a single manufacturing site. The products included in the recall all have the expiration dates during November, 2014.

Roanoke Veterinarian Dr. Bridget Hickman with Roanoke Animal Hospital says salmonella doesn't just make people sick.  "It affects dogs similarly to people. They can have bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, lethargy," Dr. Hickman said. "They can be carriers of salmonella and not show any signs of illness and that's what's scary. "

That's because the pathogen can be transferred to pet owners making them sick.

There have not been any reports of illness so far from the recalled food.

If it seems as though there have been more recalls in recent years you're right.  Since 2007 pet food manufacturers have been required to report serious problems to the Food and Drug Administration, including salmonella contamination.

"It's always been out there. We're just hearing about it more.," said Dr. Hickman.
