The need for school supplies across the Roanoke Valley is greater than ever. City and County Schools have partnered to "Load The Bus" with supplies for children in need.

Roanoke City and County schools have partnered for one of the area's largest school supply drives to help children in need.

"Load the Bus for Kids" kicks off Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The drive continues Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The school systems are working with three Walmart locations: Valley View, Clearbrook and Bonsack.

According to Justin McLeod with Roanoke City Schools, there were 652 homeless students in the system. He says the need for school supplies is greater than ever.

There will be a school bus in each of those parking lots, where people can drop off donations. The drive also coincides with tax-free weekend, helping families save even more.

Here are some of the school supplies that are in need:

  • Backpacks
  • Pens (blue or black)
  • Notebooks
  • 3-Ring Binders
  • Scissors
