Roanoke County exploring new radar technology

Would be the first locality in Virginia to have the new radars

Roanoke County Police is considering buying new radar technology that will make you safer, or more likely to be pulled over, it just depends on your point of view.

A few officers were testing out the six-thousand dollar radar on Electric Road this afternoon.

The radar can tell your speed from nearly a mile away, can check your following distance from the car in front of you and can even tell if you're wearing your seat belt.

If an officer pulls you over using one of these, he's also got you on camera.

"This is a video enabled laser device that has a GPS, stores the video memory of the offense that can be used in court or shown to the offender," said Mike Nesselrodt with ComSonic, the Harrisonburg-based company that designed the radar.

If Roanoke County decides to get them, they'll be the first county in Virginia to do so.
