Roanoke County firefighter/EMT Barry Brown and Police Officer Eric Austin sprang into action when they realized two lives were at risk, but they weren't responding to an emergency here in western Virginia.
The two men rescued a woman and her young son at a North Carolina beach.
The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors recognized Brown and Austin Tuesday afternoon. In early July, they were vacationing with their families in Holden Beach, North Carolina.
During Tuesday's meeting, they explained how the boy was caught in a rip current, and his mother went in after him. Brown and Austin quickly followed and rescued the pair as they were struggling to stay afloat.
