UPDATE: Arrest made in Salem 7-Eleven robbery

James Edward Merit Jr. is accused of robbing a 7-Eleven in Salem on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013.

SALEM, Va. -

An arrest has been made in a Salem robbery that happened early Monday morning.

The 7-Eleven store at 2035 Roanoke Boulevard was robbed around 1:10 a.m. Monday morning.

21-year-old James Edward Merit Jr. has been arrested. Merit is charged with robbery.

Merit was found in the 900 block of Citadel Lane, which is a few blocks from the convenience story.

Merit is being held in the Roanoke County/Salem jail until his arraignment.


Original story

On September 30, 2013 at 1:08 a.m., the Salem Police received a 911 call from Seven Eleven located at 2035 Roanoke Boulevard of an armed robbery.

Officers arrived at the store within minutes of the call.

An employee stated the suspect had fled on foot towards Roanoke City.

The employee reported that the suspect demanded cash and may have had a weapon.

A short time later, a suspect (later identified as James Edward Merit Jr.) was located by officer Blackwell in the 900 block of Citadel Lane near the location of the robbery.

Merit was positively identified and taken into custody by officer Campbell.

Other members of the platoon searched the area on foot and recovered numerous items of evidence including the money taken.

Merit was jailed with no bond pending an arraignment.
