TRAFFIC ALERT UPDATE: Dozens of roads closed throughout the area

Roads closed due to flooding

Dozens of roads are closed throughout the area. An important reminder, police say please do not attempt to drive through water crossing the roadway.

Salem update:

The low water bridge at Mill Lane remains closed.
Riverside Drive is closed from Mill Lane to Mountain Avenue
Orchard Street is closed from Tremont Road to Homestead Drive
The Westbound lane of Union Street at the intersection of 4th Street also is closed.

The Roanoke Police Department reports the following road closures:

13th Street and Eastern Avenue
13th Street and Mason Mill Road
20th Street and Mason Mill Road
2900 block of Edgewood Street
Belle Avenue and Springfield Road
Bennington Street and Riverdale Road
Bennington Street and Pike Lane
Bennington Street and Queen Ann Drive
Bennington Street and Riverland Road and Mt. Pleasant Boulevard
Caldwell Street and Summit Lane
Comer Street and Melrose Avenue
Cravens Creek Lane and Crestmoor Drive

Roanoke County Police report the following closures:

West Riverside is closed near the Salem City line.
La Marre Drive from Williamson Road to Hugh Avenue is closed.
Verndale Drive from Florist Road to Orlando Avenue & Tampa Drive are also closed.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports the following closures:

Approximately five miles of Route 221 (Bent Mountain Road) in Roanoke County is closed between its intersections with Route 690 (Poage Valley Road) and Route 602 (Callaway Road).
Multiple mudslides have occurred along this section of Route 221, and the Virginia Department of Transportation has been working throughout the night to make repairs. No estimated time for reopening Route 221 has been established at this time.
Heavy rains have flooded or damaged many roads throughout the Roanoke Valley, particularly in Roanoke and Craig counties. Downed trees also are reported throughout the region.

A sinkhole in Roanoke County has closed Route 1767 (Old Farm Road) near its intersection with Route 689 (Roselawn Road).
