Virginia agency says disability backlog will be cleared

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- -

Virginia officials have vowed to clear a backlog of request for disability services by the weekend.

The Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services attributes the backlog to a large number of requests stemming from new deadlines for requesting or renewing services.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that hundreds of people with disabilities and their families have not received services for help and respite benefits for months.

Jonathan G. Martinis with the Quality Trust for Individuals with Disabilities says many of the requests have lingered for months. He says that's put people with disabilities at risk of injury or institutionalization.

The department says the backlog will be cleared no later than Friday.
