Virginia's 16th STEM Academy has opened at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg.

A grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the XLR8 STEM Academy was held Monday morning.

Gov. Bob McDonnell says in a news release that the academy will offer hands-on, project-based learning in science, technology, engineering and math.

The STEM academies are partnerships between colleges and K-12 schools. Students can earn dual course credit, allowing them to work toward a college degree. Students also can earn industry certifications.
