Your Hometown News Leader, WDBJ7 has announced that Melissa Gaona has been promoted to co-anchor of WDBJ7 at 11:00. She will join Chris Hurst, Robin Reed and Travis Wells on the Roanoke-Lynchburg market’s most watched late newscast.
“I’m honored that the station is giving me this opportunity,” said Gaona, who is currently part of WDBJ7’s early morning newscast team. “A big part of what I love about reporting for WDBJ7 Mornin’ is meeting the people in our communities and telling their stories, so I hope to continue that in my new role.”
“Melissa is very good journalist, asking questions in a way that puts folks that aren’t accustomed to talking on camera at ease during interviews,” said news director Kelly Zuber. “We’re looking forward to seeing her on the anchor desk and out in the field reporting, telling the stories in her unique way.”
In addition to co-anchoring the 11:00pm news with Chris Hurst, Gaona will also anchor the 10:00pm newscast on WDBJ7’s sister station MY19.
“Melissa came to WDBJ7 with experience as a journalist and knowledge of how things work in the real world,” said general manager Jeffrey A. Marks. “She has since then, shown our viewers that she knows how to connect with people in all walks of life.”
Gaona served in the United States Army as a diesel mechanic after high school and later attended Texas Tech University where she studied English. After graduation in 2008, she began her journalism career as a sports reporter for a newspaper in east Texas. From there she headed east to Virginia for her first television reporting job at WCYB in Bristol. She moved up interstate 81 in June of 2011 to join the reporting staff at WDBJ7.
WDBJ7 viewers will see Gaona move into her new role in April.
