LYNCHBURG, Va. -

Freshman at one area college won't have time for parties this week. They're too busy volunteering in the community.

Lynchburg College assigns service projects to all of its first year students. It's an annual tradition, and a way for students to learn about the city where they'll be living for the next four years.

Students completed projects Wednesday that included serving food at the Daily Bread soup kitchen and pulling weeds at The Arc of Central Virginia.

"To be honest I wasn't expecting this," said Jordan Banks, a first year student from Delaware. "But it's really good to get out in the community, see some different places, and help people that you normally would not."

Lynchburg College is welcoming about 530 first year students to campus this week.
