No charges against police in deadly Giles County shootout

GILES CO., Va. -

A special prosecutor will not file charges against law enforcement after a man was killed in a shootout Giles County.

Jonathan Robertson, 32, was shot and killed following a shootout with police in Pearisburg on October 26.

Special prosecutor Thomas Bowers announced Monday that police were justified in their use of deadly force. Bowers, who is the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Salem, was appointed special prosecutor by the Circuit Court of Giles County.

Police were initially looking for Robertson in connection to a robbery and shooting the previous night. Robertson and law enforcement engaged in gunfire in three different locations.

Robertson died at a Roanoke hospital.
