Hunters have waited all year long and opening day is finally here.

ROANOKE, Va. -

Hunters have waited all year long and general firearm opening day is finally here.

On Saturday, November 16, 2013, opening day starts for hunters in Virginia.

Opening day is from November 16 - 30.

Hunter Education Instructor Vernie Kennedy says there are four safety instructions to remember before you hunt with a gun:

1). Know your target and beyond.

2). Muzzle control at all times.

3). Treat your gun as if it is loaded.

4). Keep your finger away from the trigger until you're ready to shoot.

When hunting any species during a firearms deer season and on youth/apprentice deer hunting day, every hunter or persons accompanying a hunter, shall wear a blaze orange hat or blaze orange upper body clothing that is visible from 360 degrees.

Some local stores are gearing up for what always proves to be a busy time of the year.

WDBJ 7 checked in with Bryansteens Gun and Archery on Peters Creek Road. They say business is already steady.

People are coming in for ammunition and cleaning supplies on a regular basis.

Some local businesses are even seeing a shortage of some types of ammo. Employees said it's not as bad as it's been in past years but they said fewer hunters buying the ammo in bulk.

“They don't because the price has gone up,” said sales associate Gwynn Weaver. “They don't buy two boxes of it so you don't need a whole lot of ammo to hunt so I mean that’s your goal to not use more than one cartridge."
