ROANOKE, Va. -

A provocative piece of Roanoke's past came tumbling down Tuesday morning.

The building that once housed Papa Joe's nightclub was torn down.

It and other buildings along Wise Avenue are being demolished as part of a Virginia Department of Transportation project to rebuild the intersection with Hollins Road.

Papa Joe's raised eyebrows and tempers back in 1965 because of its scantily-clad dancers and alcohol.

It became a country and western bar a few years later. Click here to see WDBJ7's coverage from the 1960s of the controversial club.
