Debra Joaquin has lived in the same mobile home just outside Martinsville in Henry County for 20 years.
"All of us have been here, some of them been here nine years, some of them have been here 10 years, 11 years. It was like one big family here. Everybody got along with each other. You never had no fussing with each other," Joaquin said.
That family is slowly breaking up. What used to be a packed street is now a ghost town.
"It's sad. It's sad," Joaquin said.
Her neighbors have either moved out or sold out, leaving her and another family alone.
Soon she'll have to follow suit.
The owner of the land she lives on told Joaquin and her neighbors earlier this year they're all going to have to move before the end of October. Joaquin says that's when crews start grading for a new Family Dollar store.
A media representative with the company confirmed it with us in an email, "Our Real Estate team utilized sophisticated modeling software to determine that Axton would be ideal site for a Family Dollar store, and we are very excited about bringing our value and convenience to this new location."
The new store is set to open at the beginning of next year. The chain's website shows 16 Family Dollar stores already in Southern Virginia.
"That's just something we have to face, you know it's going to happen. I mean we can't do nothing about it," Joaquin said.
She lives alone, is on disability with a fixed income and can't move her heavy furniture by herself.
"You still got to hire people to come in here and help you cause peoples not going to do it for free. I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens," Joaquin said.
