Roanoke celebrates Cinco de Mayo early
Cinco de Mayo combines the celebration of the Mexican culture with a good time!
Even though it's two days away, Roanoke got in on the early festivities.
This is the fourth year the Roanoke Police Department has thrown the Wildwood Neighborhood Cinco de Mayo Celebration.
Saturday's family friendly event aimed to commemorate Mexico's defeat of the French back in 1862.
There was plenty of music, food, pinatas and fun for the adults.
Organizers say this type of event provides a sense of unity within the community.
"It brings us all together no matter if we're black, white, Hispanic, Mexican. It's doesn't matter we're all one and we're all God's children and we should just be working together,"Chris Craft of the Wildwood Civic League told Your Hometown News Leader.
The police department is already planning next year's event.
