ROANOKE, Va. -

Roanoke City Council members voted for a 10 percent pay increase Tuesday. A majority of members embraced a compromise proposal that leaders say is consistent with the raises other city employees are receiving this year.

The proposal includes a 2 percent pay raise, and additional funds to cover employee contributions to health and pension plans.  City council must vote again on the proposal at its next meeting later this month.

State law requires an intervening election before a raise can take effect, so council members wouldn't receive the increase until next July.
