Roanoke City Police officers kept busy Tuesday morning as they staked out at a busy intersection near downtown Roanoke.
The Roanoke City Police Department and Virginia State Police set up at Elm Avenue in Roanoke starting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Not only is the area extremely congested, but it's also undergoing a major construction project right now. Officers pulled over many drivers for either failure to obey a sign, or impeding traffic.
"The violation we see the most is actually blocking the intersection,” Captain Sam Roman of the Roanoke Police Department said. “So if cars block the intersection, it's very difficult for other cars to get through. And that is what's actually causing the congestion. So that's what we're trying to alleviate here today."
In about 30 minutes, officers had already written 17 citations.
Officers say this effort will continue until the problem is solved.
Remember, even if the light is green, do not hang out in the intersection.
