ROANOKE, Va. -

Too many people have died at the hands of a loved one.

That's why an event to combat domestic violence is coming to Roanoke.

The city, along with community agencies, will be on hand for the first of its kind event called: "Strengthening Families: A Community Conversation about Family and Intimate Partner Violence."

Council member Sherman Lea, who created a domestic violence task force, says anyone can be a victim and that's why it's important to raise awareness.

"It's a silent type of issue that is really doing, I think, is doing a horrible disservice to our community. No, it's not racial, it's not socioeconomic, it's about domestic violence and it happens in every sector, every sector of our community," says Lea.

The event, Strengthening Families: A Community Conversation is happening Thursday, September 19th.

It will go from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center Exhibit Hall.

The event, which will include a speaker and round-table discussion, is free and open to the public.

Organizers hope to have some strategies to help victims by the end of the evening.
