ROCKY MOUNT, Va. -

The town of Rocky Mount celebrated 140 years on Labor Day.

The community gathered at the downtown farmers market Monday afternoon.

The celebration included live music, food vendors, artists and local business owners.

Rocky Mount is currently in the process of building a half a million dollar performing arts facility. Monday's event gave the public a chance to view what the building will look like when it's finished in Spring 2014.

"I saw it as a perfect opportunity to celebrate Rocky Mount and it's history and the hard work of the citizens on Labor Day and introduce everyone to the Harvester which is being fixed up across the street as a way to say hello and present to them some great music of things that will be happening next spring," said general manager Gary Jackson.

According to the town manager, the project is being funded fully by tax dollars.
