After about two and a half years, construction at the bottom of Bent Mountain on Route 221 is almost finished

ROANOKE CO., Va. -

After about two and a half years, construction at the bottom of Bent Mountain on Route 221 is almost finished.

A Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson says the project should wrap up in just a few weeks; hopefully by the first of September.

The $20 million project has widened the road from two lanes to four. They've built a median to separate those roads.

Crews have built two additional bridges over top of Back Creek and added several turning lanes.

Aside from widening the road, the bridges will make it less curvy and transportation officials hope, in turn, it's safer.

Crews are just putting the finishing touches on some of the bridges.

The idea for this project was proposed almost 20 years ago, but got delayed because of funding, so the day is getting close.
